Public Speaking – Love and Fear all in One
Speaking in front of a crowd is one of the biggest fears that people have. Most of us talk to people all day long whether it be our co-workers, friends, family, shopping experiences and the list goes on but when it comes to standing in front of a crowd, whether it be 5 or 50 people we freeze. I have to admit up until 5 years ago I felt the same way but now I can stand in front of 5 or 500 people and it’s ok. I didn’t melt…. There still is the little flutter in my stomach but I have learned to overcome that and so can you!
Here are a few tips that I have learned along the way.
- Take a deep breath before you talk. Bring the air into your belly and this will relax you at the same time.
- View the audience as a few of your close friends around a campfire. They are happy to be with you and want to hear what you say.
- It’s ok to make mistakes. The audience won’t notice if you keep going. You can always make a joke about it. If you don’t make a big deal about it – your audience won’t either.
- Talk with passion. The more you love your topic the better you will present it because it’s yours. Your eyes and voice will tell the story if it’s your own story.
- Eye contact – try to meet a few people before your presentation and then find them in the audience. Speak to them. It makes it easier to deliver what you have to say if you find a familiar face in the crowd. This gets easier once you find your comfort level on stage.
- Be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you are not.
- Join a local Toastmaster Club. It is an amazing experience and you will learn so much http://www.toastmasters.org/
- Make it your story. When you tell your story from your heart you are sure to be a success
- Most important tip – HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!!
These are some tips that I use when I deliver my Motivational Presentations. Try them out – you might just surprise yourself.
