Being Comfortable With Being “Alone” – My “Alone” Experience With an Incredible Ending
We look at the word “alone” and can see it as a negative word at times. Some definitions of the word are “lonely, lonesome, solitary”. What if you looked at it in a whole different light? This is something I experienced last night while down hill skiing.
I have a routine with my kids. I pick them up with their friends after school and we head over to our local downhill ski hill in Collingwood. On our previous adventures I was always “part of the gang” skiing down the hills as a group, taking in the sites and enjoying a wonderful night out.
Well last night took a different turn and at the time (to be perfectly honest) I didn’t like how it was playing out. I am the “cool” Mom, the person the kids want to hang out with. Well last night I got a reality check – one I did not expect – I had an “alone experience”.
The kids decided to go on their own journey without me. I felt “abandoned”. My ego took a blow. I thought to myself ”how can I ski for hours on end alone….”. So I bravely took my place in the “singles” line of the chair lift and started out on my journey all the while keeping up my pity party that was going on in my head all the way up the chair lift. Then….. I stopped myself from babbling, opened my eyes looked around at the beauty of my surroundings and realized I am not alone… I am never alone and I am embracing this amazing moment for what it is. After all that’s what I do in every other aspect of my life.
After I changed my outlook on the situation I had the time of my life. I went from ski hill to ski hill zooming down the powder snow taking in the spectacular view of Georgian Bay.
So anytime you feel that you have been abandoned stop for a moment and check out your surroundings and really spend some “alone” time with yourself. You just might become comfortable with being “alone” and have your own experience with an incredible ending!!!!!
Making New Years Resolutions – Simple Steps to Keeping Them
Most of us have thoughts that a New Year should mean that we also have new beginnings, new habits and sometimes a new life. Do we put so much pressure on ourselves that we set ourselves up for failure before we begin? I have a few simple steps you can take to help you ease into the New Year with confidence and success.
The first thing to realize is there are no “quick fixes” to our life. There isn’t a magical pill or piece of equipment that can alter our life in 14 days. It’s great to see the wonderful pictures of someone who has lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks but really it isn’t realistic or healthy for you. The biggest problem is we set such high expectations for ourselves and when we don’t see immediate results we get discouraged and give up.
Here are a few simple techniques to try when setting new goals for ourselves:
- Set realistic goals for yourself. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds start with 1 or 2. Once you see results it encourages you to move forward. Expecting that you will lose 20 pounds within weeks of trying puts too much pressure on yourself.
- Write your goals down. You don’t have to have paragraphs of what you want to accomplish – it could be only one word. Go back and read your goals often and change them if they are not what you really want to accomplish.
- Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it right the first time. We set such high standards for ourselves and when we don’t meet our goals we become discouraged and give up. Look at tomorrow as a new day.
- Look at your goals as a life style change. Sometimes we only look at a 4 week period and forget that this is something we want to live for the rest of our life (weight loss, healthy eating, exercise, positive thinking, etc.).
- Visualize your success. Cut out pictures or draw what you want to accomplish or visualize in your mind what the outcome will be. This is a fun exercise.
- Celebrate your accomplishments. When you have achieved one of your goals do something nice for yourself whether it be going for a walk, taking an afternoon for yourself, buying yourself something or whatever makes you feel good.
- Most important – have fun with it. It should not feel like a chore.
New Years Resolutions can be a fun and rewarding process. Know this is your life and when you put your mind to it – you can move mountains!!!!

| If there’s something in your life that you want to accomplish, it doesn’t matter if you’re 20 years old or 80 years old, you can do it.
That’s the uplifting message from Dianne Adams, inspirational speaker, photographer, mother, wife, friend, and sister, who spoke at the spring meeting of the South Bruce chapter of the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario, Thursday afternoon (May 6), at the Walker House restaurant in Southampton. Born in Richmond Hill, Adams began her journey after high school graduation, going to college for business administration and marketing. She worked as a waitress and an administrative assistant, and later as manager of data processing. She and her partner then moved to northern Ontario to operate a snowmobile dealership. They parted ways, and she moved back to Richmond Hill, where she met and married her husband, John. Adams went on to become an accounting manager and a controller but she still felt unsettled, as if she should be doing something else. They moved to Owen Sound to operate the Pet Valu store there. She took a part-time job apart from that, and then the wheels fell off. She was burned out and had to take a break. “The interesting thing was that during those days when I was in such a dark place, that’s when I started writing beautiful, inspirational quotes,” she says. “Then, one day, I was feeling better and I pulled out my writings, and I said ‘A-ha!’ I had found the treasure I’d been searching for all my life – it was inside me.” She has gone from an accountant to a healer, photographer and inspirational speaker. She and her husband and two sons now live in Oliphant. “I say to all of you, if you’re looking for your treasure outside, in a house or a car, look in the mirror and you’ll find it there, in you,” says Adams. That’s when her real journey began. “I started E-mailing my writings to friends and family, and I called them ‘Wisdom Words,” Adams says, “and I got responses back from people that the words were exactly what they needed to hear, and it was as if the words were written specifically for them.” From there, she began taking photographs that she didn’t believe she could take. “I am truly humbled by what I’m trying to accomplish here,” she says. Wisdom Words are sent out once per week through the Internet, and the responses have been marvelous, says Adams. “A girl from Indonesia wrote to thank me for the strength to get through another day – those words gave her hope,” she says. “It’s about making a difference.” The words are going all across Canada, the United States, Australia and beyond. “It doesn’t matter what age you are – if your 20 or 80 – if there’s something in your life you want to accomplish, you can do it,” says Adams. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a size two or a size 20, blond or brunette, tall or short, you are wonderful just the way you are. Your beauty comes from the inside, not the outside. Dream big and don’t let anyone stop you from accomplishing great things.”

Dianne Adams holds up one of her prints about “Strength” Adams says we all have a book inside of us and it all starts the same with our birth – God’s gift. Then, we begin writing one beautiful chapter after another on our journey through life. “We have friends and family who are with us throughout our lives, or who just stop in for awhile,” she says. “Perhaps they taught us a lesson or we taught them a lesson, or maybe they just made for a really interesting story. “You can change the direction of your life now – your options are limitless. If you want to build a beautiful garden, go get some seeds. Some books will be romances, others tragedies, or humorous or a series of books. It’s your novel, it’s your legacy.” Adams urges people to learn from the past, embrace the future, but live for the moment because it’s the most important time of all. She also encourages everyone to become more positive about life by following four steps:
“You all have a best-seller inside of you, and I can hardly wait to read it,” Adams says. Besides being an inspirational speaker, Adams is a personal life coach and a healer. She also sells framed and matted prints of her photographs linked with her inspirational words. She can be reached at wisdomwords@sympatico.ca or 519-534-3610, or check out her website at www.wisdomwords.ca. In other news at the meeting, Joan Kirkham has received the Cora Bailey award in recognition of her service to the branch of the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario. Kirkham is also looking for help with the community flower beds in Kincardine. A plaque, recognizing the group’s hard work, would be installed beside the flower beds. |
